Select the Best Bunk Bed for ChildrenHow to Choose the Right Type of Kids' and Teens' Loft Beds
Bunk beds are available in a variety of styles - junior loft beds, twin over twin, futon bunks and more. This guide explains the differences and benefits of each kind.
The range of options available in bunk and loft beds is amazing, not to mention a bit overwhelming. Before purchasing this space-saving bedroom furniture, parents should consider the way mattresses can be arranged. Wise selection of style will accommodate families' sleep and space needs. Junior Loft Beds – Best Bet for Young ChildrenFor safety reasons, full size bunk beds are not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Parents looking for space-saving options for young children could consider junior loft beds, also called low lofts. Quite frequently, junior loft beds are situated so that the beds run perpendicular to each other (see photo below) rather than stacking them parallel to each other. This type of junior loft may also add appeal by incorporating storage drawers. Determined parents may also be able to find stacked low loft beds, though that may require a bit more searching than the popular perpendicular arrangement. Often these low lofts feature the bottom mattress to be at or just above floor level. Whichever style parents choose, it is imperative that the top bunk has safety railing to protect children. Twin Over Twin or Twin Over Full – Perfect Option for Kids and TeensFamilies looking for traditional bunks beds will likely be drawn toward twin over twin or twin over full arrangements. These can easily be found in both parallel and perpendicular arrangements, and may feature storage drawers, built-in desks, or stairs. Generally speaking, the simpler the style, the cheaper the cost. Full Over Full – Great for Large Families, Tall Children, and AdultsFor families with more than the average two children, full over full bunks can be the answer if the family needs to maximize their sleep space. Full over full can also have great appeal to tall children or for adults who might be sharing an apartment. Futon Loft Beds – Better for Overnight Guests and Social Entertaining The convertible novelty of futon loft beds often appeal to older children and teens. However, this style probably is not the best option if the bottom mattress is to be used on a regular basis. Futon bunks are better used for the occasional overnight guest, or for children who entertain friends in their bedroom and seating space is required for movie watching or playing video games. These mattress arrangements reflect the basic options available to parents. By further investigating construction materials (wood or metal) and added features available, parents can find the perfect bunk bed set up for their child's bedroom.
